The way things are today how do I keep the investment of my firearms safe and secure? First ask yourself what are the chances that someone will break into my home? I know that right after I write this and you read it that breaking news on TV will be how someone home in the city next you had their home broken in to. Even with that said I Keep my home locked up that best that I can and feel confident that if a thief really wants in he is in I am not going to make it easy for them but other than have someone on guard twenty four seven. I feel safe in my own home and area.

Even though I feel this way in my home I have two types of gun storage in my home. I have a wooden gun cabinet in the den that the rifles, shotguns, pistols and other firearms that I use often are kept there. In a Wooden cabinet with elaborate etched door so that when you walk by it catches our eye to look at the gun cabinet and gives me a chance to unlock the doors and pull off a piece of finely crafted work of steel and wood, be it The 458 single shot rifle that my nephew made in Wyoming or the Old side by side that I hunt pheasant with in Iowa, it is nice to know that I can have them close at hand. The house is locked and the Gun Cabinet is Locked and the neighbors all know that a there more than one gun in that house. So if you are breaking in to steal something or one of MY GUN’s you better make sure that I or any of my family is not home. Anyway that is another Post or article down the road.

I stated that I have two gun storage systems in my home the other is a Gun Safe. I have that hidden gun storage in my master bedroom closet. I would devastated if any of the guns in the gun cabinet came up missing  so the guns that are irreplaceable I keep in the gun safe. We also keep other irreplaceable item in the Gun Safe as well Passports, deeds, birth certificates and my wife’s great grandmother’s jewelry.  There is something you cannot replace. I could go out and buy a new 54 cal Hawkins but it in no way replace the Hawkins that my farther given to me to deer hunt with it would be a 54 cal rifle how can you out a value of some things it was given to my freely.

While looking at the gun cases that I purchased over the years there only two that are the same. I have hard plastic cases, cloth cases, aluminum case and a wooden gun case for my double barrel and over and under shotguns. To determining what style of gun case you would need you will have to ask yourself some questions. Where am I hunting? How many guns will I need when I get there?  How will I be carrying my firearm by hand, four-wheeler, jeep or horse back?

The cost of a gun case is considerably less than a gun cabinet but, I have seen a few in my day that cost more than most of the guns that own. The wide availability of gun case makes it very easy to purchase a gun case. Cabela’s have one of the best variety of gun cases in one place that I have found. The price ranges from under $20 dollars for a soft cloth gun case and hard plastic gun case to $ 100 dollars. I have even found a $10 dollar soft gun case there.

The Aluminum gun cases and the wooden take -down gun cases cost a little more but, you will be surprise that these gun cases are not that expense compared to the gun that they are designed to protect.

These are very inexpensive less than $15 dollars and for the package of six I have found them for under $30 dollars.

The most appealing features are they are widely available from your local hardware store to any Wal-Mart store. They may prevent discharging the firearm but it cannot prevent someone to loading the gun. The first rule for gun safety is never leave a gun loaded and always act as if it is loaded, never pointing at anyone. Caution should be taken never load with the trigger lock in place  under certain circumstances the gun could fire a trigger lock cannot be used on a lever-action  rifle or shotgun, keys and combinations must be kept away from children and other unauthorized persons.

Cable locks are another way to make your firearm safer it is a gun lock system that disables the firearm from being fired.                   They can be used on wide variety of firearm from bolt action to semiautomatic. The cable gum lock is very available and be found in the same places as the trigger locks. You can use this style of locking system to lock the gun to a solid object. Caution should be taken to insure to install according to the direction, not around the trigger and keys and combinations must be kept away from all unauthorized persons and the cable could be cut with a hacksaw or with a set of cable cutter.

Disassembling the firearm to create a condition with that firearm to a state that the gun cannot fire or be discharged is another safe way to insure peace of mind on keeping unauthorized persons from firing the firearm. On a bolt-action rifle the bolt can easily remove and stored somewhere secure. On semiautomatic the trigger assembly can be remove with simple gun punch and stored in a secure place. On a revolver the cylinder can be remover and place in safe keeping somewhere secure. The goal should be to make firearms safer.

 A gun safe is made of metal and most gun cabinet are made of metal unless you purchase a wooden gun cabinet for the living room or den to show off you gun collection. Now days you can find a large metal gun safe that will accent that same room style an elegant. The wooden gun cabinet may keep you firearms safe from being damage by keeping them in a secured place and out of unauthorized little hands and locked.

A typical key lock style is good if you know where you hid the key, it’s not going to keep Old great grandpa’s shotgun safe from thieves if you leave the key in the door lock.  There is a third type of lock for your Gun safe or gun cabinet it is a biometric lock, basically it uses you finger print to activate the locking mechanism. Not  too similar with the last style of lock but, I understand that it takes a computer chip to read your finger print and process that data to determine if it is your finger print so  the faster the chip the better you are.

Determining how much to spend on a gun safe or gun cabinet depend on your individual finances. You could ask yourself how much do I have invested on the guns that I already have, what guns I may purchase in the future and what the most practical way to protect my investment is.
